INDICATIONS:
Treatment of life-threatening hypertension, particularly in cases of:
- Malignant hypertension;
- Hypertensive encephalopathy;
- Aortic dissection, when beta-blocker therapy is unsuitable;
- Severe pre-eclampsia;
- Post-operative hypertension.
DOSAGE:
Adults:
- Initial dose
- Treatment should begin with a continuous infusion of nicardipine at a rate of 3–5 mg/h for 15 minutes.
- The infusion rate may be increased in increments of 0.5 or 1 mg every 15 minutes. The infusion rate must not exceed 15 mg/h.
- Maintenance dose
Once the target blood pressure is reached, the dose should be gradually reduced—generally to between 2 and 4 mg/h—to maintain therapeutic efficacy.
